  • 2nd Wave of Feminism- 1970s, Betty Friedan wrote the Feminine Mystique which started this second wave of feminism.
    First BC pill approved by the FDA- Envoid released in 1960 (or 63)
    Griswold v. CT.- mixed with the 3rd amendment because the decision to use birth control is a private matter.
  • Women can’t wear pants, marital rape doesn’t exist (legally), and more laws about women‘s rights keep popping up, giving them little to no freedoms.
    Add Women to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because new job opportunities applied to them, but there were a lot of loopholes.
  • Sex + Caste- a study on sex and social hierarchy. Saw that there was sexism in almost every civil rights or freedoms movements and many leaders were men.
  • Betty Friedan decided women needed a NAACP but for women.
    The National Organization for Women (NOW)- led by Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan
    Gloria got hired as a bunny in a Playboy club undercover for NOW, starts publishing A Bunny’s Tale (tail lol) which exposes how she’s treated by customers and Playboy, all the assault and body shaming, they were weighed everyday and were forced to accept any treatment from the men visiting these clubs.
  • Title IX- prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any form of education, everyone, men and women, are entitled to equal education, including athletics.
  • Make military schools accept women for the first time.
    Laws criminalizing marital rape start forming, but not nationally until the 90s.
    Roe v. Wade- legalized first trimester abortions in all states. Undone by Dobbs case in 2021.
    Mainly passed because the government didn’t want women to lose reproductive abilities or their lives because of illegal and dangerous abortions.
  • Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)- you can’t discriminate on someone based on sex. Closed loopholes in acts like the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
    Not all women were supportive of the ERA.
    Phyllis Schlafley- against the ERA because it would destroy families with drafting and make women lesbians???
  • Congress needed 1 more state to ratify the ERA and does not get passed.
    The women’s movement (2nd) fizzles out.
    The Feminist Sex Wars- a disagreement in the movement about how the movement feels about porn. Some women said it objectifies women, some say it allows women to choose what they want to do with their bodies.
