  • Basketball
    A game played with two teams of five players on the court, with the objective to score in the opponent's basket and prevent them from scoring
  • Start of the game
    Jump ball in the center of the court with two opponents facing the direction of their opponent's basket
  • Moving the basketball
    Players can only move the basketball around the court by dribbling or passing
  • Winner
    The team who scores the most points in their opponent's basket at the end of the game time
  • Game duration
    • Two halves
    • Four quarters
  • Half time
    3 minutes to 15 minutes depending on the age group and level
  • Clock stops
    In the final minute of the first half, final two minutes of the second half, and during timeouts
  • Overtime
    1. 3 to 5 minutes, continues until a winner is decided
    2. Each team gets one timeout during overtime
    3. Fouls from the second half carry over
  • Scoring
    • Free throw - 1 point
    • Field goal - 2 points
    • 3-point shot - 3 points (if any part of foot on line, 2 points)
  • Substitutions
    • Unlimited substitutions allowed on dead ball situations
    • Coach must wait for referee signal to substitute
  • Timeouts
    • 2 per half, 1 minute duration
    • Coach can make substitutions during timeout

  • Foul shots
    • 2 shots for fouls on 2-point attempts, 3 shots for fouls on 3-point attempts

    • Out of bounds

  • Free throw rules
    • Shooter cannot cross line until ball hits rim
    • Other players have restrictions on when they can enter the lane
  • Possession arrow
    Used after held balls or unclear out of bounds calls, alternates between teams
  • Injured player
    Must be substituted, can re-enter at next opportunity
