Marie of Hess

• Maria Alexandronova (Marie of Hess) met the future Tsar in when she was just 14, moved to Russia in 1840, converted to the Russian Orthodox Church and married Alexander in 1841.
• Marie gave birth to 6 sons and 2 daughters.
• She suffered from tuberculosis but lived until 1880.
• The death of Nicholas Alexandrovich, her eldest son, at the age of 21 in 1865 had a devastating effect on her.
