Rosenhan & Seligman (1989)

• proposed some signs that illustrate failure to function adequately
• no longer conforming to interpersonal rules i.e no eye contact, no maintaining personal space
• severe personal distress
• behaviour becomes irrational/ dangerous to others around
• diagnoses are usually made after looking at a number of these 'definitions'
