Desmond Tutu

• Anglican priest - became general secretary of the South African council of churches in 1978
• He used his abilities as a speaker to denounce Apartheid - became famous worldwide and won nobel peace prize (1984)
• 1985 became bishop of Johannesburg and 1986 Archbishop of cape town, head of Anglican church in South Africa
• First black dean in Anglican Church (1975)
• Government was not pleased about his award, 75% of whites said it was undeserved
