  • Chanley's study aimed to compare the adherence of children with asthma using the funhaler to those using the standard inhaler with the spacer.
  • The sample was made up of 32 children aged 1.5 - 6 years who had asthma and used the traditional inhaler with the spacer.
  • Participants were invited to use the funhaler for two weeks and answer the same questionnaire after the two weeks.
  • Parents were contacted every day while using the standard inhaler and the funhaler treatment to ask if their child had taken their treatment the previous day.
  • When using the standard inhaler 59% had taken their medication the previous day compared to the 81% using the funhaler.
  • For the people using the standard inhaler, they were only able to achieve their four deep breaths per cycle 50% of the time, but this was achieved 80% of the time using the funhaler.
  • When using the standard inhaler, parents reported having a successful treatment 10% of the time, but this number rose to 73% when using the funhaler.
  • Attitudes of children were also affected. It was found that a normal response to the standard inhaler was fear and only 10% of children showed pleasure in using it, meanwhile, there was no fear in children using the funhaler. 70% of children displayed pleasure as a response.
  • The funhaler was able to increase adherence effectively.
