    • Depends on activity but….
    • Young athletes
    • Older athletes
    • more common in Middle aged men
    • Sedentary people
    • Obesity –BMI & metabolic
    • spondyloarthropathies
    • Children get enthesis problems
    • related to growth areas and weak points in the chain.
  • Intrinsic risk factors:
    • Age
    • Genetics/family history
    • Hormones eg oestrogen
    • Biomechanics eg ankle DF range
    • Diabetes and adiposity, high BMI, inflammatory conditions
    • Reduced strength of muscle
    • Tendon structure
    • Previous injury
  • Extrinsic risk factors:
    • Training errors - overuse
    • Load intensity/frequency
    • Sudden re-load after off-load, eg pre-season
    • Lack of recovery
    • Repetitive movements
    • Medication
    • Corticosteroids
    • Fluoroquinolones, eg …-floxacin, acute, (Achilles)
    • HRT
    • Statins (Achilles), longer term
    • Smoking
