mitosis

Cards (12)

  • interphase: is when normal metabolic activity takes place and the DNA replicates itself
    • Prophase - DNA condenses and spindle fibers form. Nuclear membrane breaks down.
    • Metaphase - chromosomes line up along equator of cell
    • Anaphase - sister chromatids separate at center of cell and move towards opposite poles via spindle fibers
    • Telophase- nuclear membrane reform . The DNA unravels and the spindle fibers break down
    • Cytokinesis- splitting of cytoplasm
    • Mitosis is important for: growth, repair of damaged cells and to asexually reproduce.
    • Mitosis ensures that cells divide only when they need to and stop when required.
    • Cancer- mutations in the DNA of cells leading to uncontrolled cell division forming lumps called a tumor.
    • Benign tumors- non cancerous growth of abnormal cells, confined to a specific area.
    • malignant tumors- cancerous growth of abnormal cells which can spread throughout the body.
    • Mitosis is the nuclear division producing 2 genetically identical daughter cells
