• reversable - inhibitor doesn't bind permanently
• non reversable - inhibitor binds permanently to enzyme
• depends on the strength of the bonds between the enzyme and the inhibitor
• strong covalent bonds - inhibitor cant be removed so is irreversable
• weaker hydrogen bonds or weak ionic bonds - inhibitor can be removed
