Reproduce, they can only do this inside a hostcell.
What do viruses do?
They firstly invade the hostcell where they reproduce. This is very damaging to the cell, when the virusleaves the cell, it can cause the cell to burstopen and die.

In the air e.g. waterdroplets (Influenza)
In water e.g. cholera
Directcontact between people e.g. HIV
How do we reduce the spread of pathogens?
Wash your hands before eating.
Providing people with cleandrinkingwater.
Using condoms during sexualintercourse.
Isolation - In the cases of highlyinfectious diseases.
