What is an endocrine system 
It is made up of endocrine glands
What is an endocrine gland 
A group of specialised cells which secrete chemica (hormones)
What do endocrine glands secrete hormones 
Straight into the bloodstream
what is the pituitary gland 
It produces a growth hormone which controls the growth of bones and muscles
What does anti diuretic hormone that the pituitary gland secretes do  
Increases re absorption of water into the kidneys
What does Gonadotrophins that the pituitary gland secretes do 
Controls the development of the ovaries and testes
What is the thyroid gland 
Produces thyroxine which controls the rate of metabolism and rate glucose is used up in metabolism
What is the adrenal gland
Produces adrenaline which increases heart and breathing rate
What are the testis
Produces testosterone controlling sperm production
what is the pineal gland 
Produces melatonin which affects reproductive development and daily cycles
What is the thymus
Produces thymosin which promotes production and maturation of white blood cells
What is the pancrease 
produces insulin whcih converts excess glucose into glycogen in the liver and glucagon which converts glycogen back to glucose
What is the ovaries  
Produces oestrogen and controls ovulation, progesterone prepares uterus lining for embryo

Chemical messengers since they carry information throughout the body
what are hormones transported in
The blood plasma
What are steroid hormones 
Are lipid soluble, they pass through the lipid component on a cell membrane and bind to steroid hormone receptors to form hormone receptor complex
What is an example of a steroid hormone
oestrogen
What is a non steroid hormone
Hydrophilic so cannot pass directly through a cell membrane, instead they bind to the cell surface membrane which triggers a cascade reaction by chemicals called second messengers
What is an example of a non steroid hormone 
Adrenaline
