Piaget's stages of development

• The Sensorimotor stage (0-2 years)


  Babies learn using their senses and motor movement. They develop object permanence.
• The Preoperational stage (2-7 years)

  • Centration
  • Egocentrism
  • Symbolic play
  • Animism
  • Irreversibility
  • Questioning phase
• In the Preoperational stage children have a difficulty understanding the world fully, they struggle with volume and quantity.
• The Concrete operational stage (7-12 years)

  • Seriation
  • Classification
  • Sequencing
  • Sorting
  • Conservation (reversibility)
  • Decentration
• In the Concrete operational stage children learn through concrete objects. At this stage Piaget believed they have very little understanding of morality.
• Formal Operational stage (12+ years)

  • Abstract thinking
  • Thinking of multiple concepts at once
  • Considering multiple consequences
  • Predicting possible consequences of actions and decisions.
