  • The respect principle means that psychologists respect the participants of their study and do not exploit them. It includes:
    • informed consent,
    • confidentiality,
    • right to withdraw.
  • The competence principle means that psychologists maintain the high standards of research and act as best as they can to protect participants.
  • The responsibility principle means that psychologists are responsible for the wellbeing of their participants. It includes:
    • protection from harm,
    • debrief.
  • The integrity principle means that psychologists must value honesty, accuracy, and clarity in their research. It includes:
    • deception.
  • To evaluate breaking ethical principles we must complete a cost benefit analysis.
    _ decreases reputation, less research is approved.
    _ reduces likelihood of future funding/participants , limit our knowledge of behaviour.
    + increases knowledge, increases usefulness.
    + reduces the risk of demand characteristics, results are more valid.
