  Social- socially constructed stigmas
• Goffman and stigmatised identities

  stigmatised identities/ those considered undesirable= socially constructed through interactions

  ->> considers those who a discredited (visible stigma) and discreditable (stigma can be concealed)
• How may stigmatised identities try and gain positive identities?

  • attempting to hide the stigma
  • admitting the stigma
  • protesting the stigma
• Interactionalist view

  • reinforce hierarchy through interactions->> changes depending on 'audience' or context
• Feminist view

  reinforce patriarchy
• Marxist view

  m/c superiority, w/c inferiority
• Functionalist view

  reinforces social order to create further social consensus
