  • time rolls its tanks
time is described as a enemy as it means the speakers memories are effect, the speaker is stubborn for this to not be the case
threatening to erode the speaker's memories as the years go by, the speaker holds tightly to what little she has of her home, describing how her memory “tastes of sunlight.” Ultimately, it's easy to see why memory is so important to the speaker—she has very little else.
  • i am branded with an impression of sunlight
Rumens juxtaposes the positive connotations of “sunlight” with the negative connotationsof “branded” in “But I am branded by the impression of sunlight”. This shows how her love for her country will always overrule any feelings of pain caused by it.
  • sick with tyrants
an interesting example of personification because it implies that there is hope and space for healing. Later in the poem, Rumens imagines the city as a pet or child; here we also see vulnerability
  • the poet bases many ideas of emigration from countries like the middle east where people are fleeing corruption and tyranny.
