Moments Pt2

Cards (6)

  • A moment is a turning effect created by applying a force to a lever
  • The equation for it is Moment = Force x perpendicular distance (The distance from the pivot to the force/effort)
Shows that increased force or distance from pivot leads to a greater moment occuring
  • Draw out the lines from pivot to force the bottom green line represents perpendicular distance
  • MOST IMPORTANT NOTE: WHEN YOUR ASKED TO EXPLAIN SOMETHING IN TERMS OF MOMENT YOU NEED TO TALK ABOUT CLOCKWISE AND ANTI CLOCKWISE MOMENT. IF BALANCED THE ANTI CLOCKWISE AND CLOCKWISE MOMENTS ARE THE SAME. BUT IF A CHANGE IS MADE E.G FORCE DECREASED THE BALANCE IS CHANGED AND THE ANTI CLOCKWISE MOMENT IS GREATER
  • When talking about direction it is always referring to only clockwise and anti clockwise in moments
  • If a spanner and nut become stuck why can they not move anymore?
-Talk about force given to you. Not necessary just more concise e.g 200N for this scenario
-The 200N clockwise moment caused by the effort is equal to the anti clockwise moment of friction between the nut and the surface therefore no rotation occurs
