Nikolai Chernyshevsky

• Enthusiastic about the emancipation of the serfs, Chernyshevsky argued for more radical changes being needed in Russia including ending tsarist autocracy.
• He wrote his ideas in journal The Contemporary and his novel What is to be Done (1862).
• Unlike some of his supporters, he was non-violent.
• Inspired many including Lenin who even borrowed his novel title for one of his most famous works.
