Aftermath of Polish Revolt

• From 1864, Alexander II abandoned attempts at reform and followed his father’s policy of restricting Polish liberties.
• In 1864, the property of the Polish Roman Catholic Church was seized and the new Warsaw University closed in 1869.
• Russian replaced Polish as the language of government and hundreds of Russian officials were drafted in to replace Poles in the civil service.
