    Some abnormal behaviours like depression are common

    Behaviour is classified as abnormal if it violates the unwritten rules within a society

    fails to consider context
    Complicated by cultural differences
    some people with mental health issues may behave normally so they wouldn’t be diagnosed with this definition

    A person is considered abnormal if they are unable to cope with the demands of every day life
    Characteristics
    Unpredictability,unconventionality, causes observer discomfort
    Issues
    Behaviour that is dysfunctional may be functional for some
    Sometimes it’s normal to not function properly
  • deviation from ideal mental health
    We should judge psychological health by defining what is normal and ideal
    Normal characteristics
    Positive view of self, accurate perception of reality, positive friendships, capability for growth and development
    Issues
    Criteria are ideal and unrealistic
    Difficult to measure
    However, it’s a positive approach. It looks at what is desirable rather than what’s not.
