• Ferrous metals

  • Ferrous metals have iron in their structure, will rust and will react to a magnet
  • Cast Iron – tough, strong, can be brittle
  • Mild Steel – easily worked, tough, easy to weld, ductile
  • High speed steel – resistant to wear, tough, hard, very strong
  • Stainless steel – corrosion resistant, tough, chemical resistant
• Non-ferrous metals

  • Non-Ferrous metals do not rust, do not contain iron and are not magnetic
  • Aluminium – strong but light, easy to machine
  • Brass – can be cast easily, gold brown colour, shiny finish
  • Copper – good conductor of heat and electricity, reddish brown colour
