  • The authorities knew there was a plot to assassinate the Tsar and had even arrested one of the conspirators but failed to get further details from him.
  • On 1 March 1881, Alexander II was travelling to the Winter Palace in a closed carriage and was guard by a Cossack next to the coach driver.

    There were also 6 Cossacks on horseback and police officers in sledges.
  • When the carriage was approaching a corner near the Catherine Canal, 2 members of the People’s Will threw bombs at the carriage.

    These missed and landed among the Cossacks.
  • Alexander II got out of his carriage to check on the Cossacks but a third bomb was thrown that killed him and the assassin instantly.
