Treating Infertility

Cards (8)

  • Scenario 1: A woman is not releasing egg cells, how can you treat this?
Artificial FSH can be given to stimulate the eggs to mature in the ovary (it would trigger oestrogen production to make sure the uterus lining is thick). Artificial LH can then be given to stimulate the release of that egg cell in ovulation. The woman may then be able to get pregnant naturally
  • What is used to help damaged oviducts, sperm ducts, low sperm count, low sperm motility?
    Vitro Fertilisation
  • What is the 1st step in vitro fertilisation?
FSH and LH is injected in the ovary and is used to make lots of eggs mature at the same time for collection
  • What is the 2nd step of vitro fertilisation?
Eggs are collected and placed in a solution in a Petri dish
  • What is the 3rd step of Vitro fertilisation?
A sample of semen is collected and mixed with the eggs in the Petri dish
  • What is the 4th step of Vitro fertilisation?
The eggs are checked under a microscope to make sure they have been fertilised and the early embryos are developing properly
  • What is the 5th step of Vitro fertilisation?
1 or 2 embryos are placed in the uterus so they cannot implant
  • How does IVF work?
Eggs are fertilised in a lab and then implanted once they have begun to divide. IVF is not 100% successful and will have lower success rates in older women
