Any variable other than the IV that may affect the DV if it is not controlled, they do not vary systematically with the IV
Define ‘confounding variable’
A kind of EV that varies systematically with the IV so it can’t be concluded whether the change is DV is due to the IV or confounding variable
Define ‘demand characteristic’
Any cue from the researcher or research situation that may be interpreted by the ppts as revealing the purpose of the investigation causing a change in behaviour
Define ’investigator effects’
Any effect the investigators behaviour (conscious or unconscious) on the DV
Define ‘randomisation’
The use of chance methods to control for the effects of bias
Define ‘standardisation’
Using exactly the same formalised procedures and instructions for all ppts in a research study
