multi-store model

Cards (7)

  • multi store model
    A) sensory info
    B) attention
    C) sensory register
    D) STM
    E) LTM
    F) consolidation
    G) retrieval
    H) rehearsal
  • sensory register = initially info is stored for a fraction of a second here
  • STM (short term memory) = holds a few items of info for a few seconds
  • LTM (long term memory) = info that is rehearsed (consolidated) in the STM is passed to here
  • key processes;
    • attention = to get info from the sensory memory to STM
    • rehearsal = to keep info in STM or to transfer it to LTM
  • Strengths of the theory
    • model an be applied to help people with dementia
    • clive wearing also suffered from LTM impairment but STM was unaffected
  • Limitations of the theory;
    • model is very simplistic - we dont know if there are separate stores for visual and acoustic memory
    • model has been criticised for its emphasis on rehearsal (we do not always need rehearsal to recall info)
