  • the contraceptive pill contains estrogen and progesterone to prevent eggs from maturing. however,it must be taken daily.
  • the progesterone injection/implant/patch prevents ovulation.it acts over several months to years,so is more convenient then the pill,but the patient must be certain they do not want to become pregnant within that time
  • the use of hormonal methods can cause unwanted side effects,in addition to not protecting against STDs
  • intrauterine devices (IUDs),or the coil,prevent embryos from implanting in the uterus lining.they can also release progesterone to prevent ovulation
  • IUDs can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years,but must be fitted and removed by a professional. IUDS do not protect against STDs
