aspartate aminotransferase (AST)

• AST is aspartate aminotransferase
• AST was known as SGOT
• AST can be used to assess hepatocellular disorders (liver disorders) and skeletal muscular involvement in other disorders
• 2 isoenzymes of ast exist but we do not test for them
• AST specimen is stable for 3-4 days at 4 degrees C
