genetic engineering

    Cards (8)

    • Genetic engineering is the transfer of genetic information from one cell to another.
    • stage 1: identify section of DNA that contains required gene from source chromosome
    • stage 2: Extract the required gene.
    • stage 3: Extract the plasmid from the bacterial cell.
    • stage 4: insert the required gene into the bacterial plasmid.
    • stage 5: Insert the plasmid into the host bacterial cell.
    • stage 6: The bacterial cell reproduces producing the required protein.
    • examples of useful products made by genetic engineering are:
      • insulin - used to treat people who have diabetes;
      • human growth hormone - used to treat some growth disorders.
