It is argued many working class children grow up without the skills that enable them to succeed at school. These include intellectual development, language and attitudes & values.
  • Hubbs-Tait et al 2002 found that more educated parents use language that challenges their children to evaluate their own understanding and abilities e.g. “what do you think?”, which improves cognitive performance.
  • The way in which parents communicate with their children affects their cognitive and intellectual development and their ability to benefit from the process of schooling.
  • Cultural deprivation theories suggests that the difference in how parents use language is linked to social class and as a result, lower class pupils do not develop the necessary language skills to think abstractly nor explain, describe and evaluate their ideas.
