  • Nature Theory: Gesell's Maturation Theory
    1. Gesell based theory around the idea that development is genetically inherited (there from birth) and that development is a biological process.
    2. Children follow the same orderly sequence in their development. E.g. learn to roll, crawl, walk. Noting that all children move through the same sequence but in their own time.
    3. From his studies Gesell suggested averages or ‘developmental norms’ or ‘milestones’ for the PIES.
    4. Conclusion: Development is predetermined and the environment has little impact on children.
  • Nature Theory: Gesell's Maturation Theory Evaluation

Positives: Still use developed social 'norms' this day.
Study used over a large number of children.
Used new and advanced method for research.
    Negatives: Not considered individual/cultural difference.
He believed that 'norms' or 'milestones' were desirable.
