Typhoon Haiyan was a Category 5 tropical cyclone on Saffir-Simpson Scale
It formed on November 2nd 2013 in South Pacific Ocean
It was considered a natural disaster
Gusts of over 306km/hr created landfalls
The winds damaged nearly every building in the area of Guiuan
Flooding from storm surges caused huge damage to coastal areas
More than 6,000 people died with many more missing
Cost of the damage was about $2.9billion
1000 people were injured
Transport was disrupted so aid was hard
Many survivors had no food or water
Thousands of trees were uprooted
Several areas were evacuated due to chemical leaks
Seven provinces were placed under a "state of national calamity" - allowing Government to redirect funds to help address problems created by the typhoon
Roads were blocked and airports badly damaged
No freshwater or electricity - evacuations had to happen in daylight which slowed down this process
500,000 homes were destroyed

80% of all land in storms path was destroyed including 71,000 hectares of farmland
A charity called Caritas paid local people to help with the clean up
FAO provided local coconut farmers with training on alternative crops to grow
