Embedded Systems

• A combination of hardware and software designed to carry out a specific task. Built in to a device
• Microcontrollers: Made up of a CPU, memory and peripherals embedded on a single chip
• Microprocessor: Integrated circuit consisting of a CPU only with no peripherals
• System on a Chip: May contain a microcontroller, usually has a CPU, memory, secondary storage and I/O all on a single chip
• When installed, either the operator inputs data manually or automatically (e.g. via sensors)
• They can be programmable or non programmable
• A microprocessor is an integrated circuit contained on a single chip
