• The treaty of versailles claimed that germany was to blame for the outbreak of WW1
• The blame was made formal in Clause 231 of the treaty
• TOV stated that germany must pay for the damage which was 6600 million pounds
• The german economy was in shambles after the end of WW1 so they couldn't take this hit
• Germany had demanded 200 million pounds from France after the war in 1871 so they had nothing to complain about
• the germany military was limited to 100,000 men and no tanks
• Germany had to demilitarise the Rhineland, they weren't allowed an air force, and only 15,000 men in the navy
• The treaty confiscated 13% of germany's european territories
