Reactions of metals with oxygen

• When metals react with oxygen we form metal oxide
• gaining oxygen is called an oxidation reaction
• eg.

  Magnesium + oxygen ---> magnesium oxide

  'magnesium has been oxidised'
• Losing oxygen is called reduction
• eg.

  Magnesium oxide ----> magnesium + oxygen

  'magnesium atoms have been reduced'
