Edward’s death

• Edward the Confessor died

  5th January 1066
• Edward the Confessor left no heir to the throne, likely because of his piety
• Harold Godwinson claimed that Edward named him as his successor while on his deathbed
• Harold was crowned the very next day as king of England in an attempt to secure power against the other 3 claimants
