root hair cell

• these cells around found at a plant's roots, near the growing tip
• they have long hair like extensions called root hairs
• the root hairs increase the surface area of the cell to maximise the movement of water and minerals from soil into plant root
• their job is to collect water and mineral nutrients from soil
• long projections which reach out into soil
• large total surface area
• do not contain chloroplasts as photosynthesis doesn't occur here
