Sexual and asexual reproduction

• Mitoses gives rise to cells that are genetically identical .

  It is used for growth , repair , replacement and asexual reproduction
• Meiosis gives rise to cells that are genetically different .

  It is used for the production of gametes
• Fertilisation : the fusion of gamete nuclei
• sexual reproduction includes

  • the fusion of the nuclei of two gametes makes a zygote
  • production of genetically different offspring , due to variation
• Asexual reproduction only requires one parent , so there is no mixing of genetic information . Therefore offspring are genetically identical to the parent
• The gametes in plants are : pollen (grains) and egg (ovum) cells
• The gametes in animals are : sperm and egg cells
