Momentum

Cards (9)

  • What is momentum?
It is a vector quantity, it has a magnitude and directio. Momentum is conserve, providing no external force acts upon it
  • What is change in momentum?
The force causing change is equal to the rate of change of momentum. The larger the force, the faster the change in momentum and visa versa.
  • What are the safety features for momentum?
    • crumple zones (crumple on impact)
    • seatbelts (stretch slightly)
    • air bags
  • How does the safety features of momentum work?
Time stop increases, increases time taken for change in momentum (but decreases the change in momentum) and reduces the force
  • What are steps in Terminal velocity?
    1. acceleration
    2. Terminal velocity
    3. deceleration
  • How does step 1 of terminal velocity (acceleration) work?
Forces are unbalanced, weight acts down and body accelerates as speed increases air resistance increase in opposite direction
  • How does step 2 of terminal velocity (terminal velocity) work?
Balanced force (resultant force is zero), speed constant
  • How does step 3 of terminal velocity (deceleration) work?
forces are unbalanced, air resistance bigger than weight, speed decreases
  • momentum
