  • Chromatography is used to separate a mixture of soluble substances.
  • Mobile Phase - the solvent moving through the paper carrying dissolved substances with it.
  • Stationary Phase - the surface through which the solvent and dissolved substances move.
  • Paper Chromatography:
    • Draw a pencil line close to the bottom of the paper but above the water level
    • Add ink drops onto the pencil line
    • Place in a beaker with water until it reaches the top of the paper
  • Substances with a higher solubility will be carried higher up the paper in paper chromatography.
  • Rf Value = distance moved by solute / distance moved by solvent
