Chromatography is used to separate a
mixture
of
soluble
substances.
Mobile Phase
- the solvent moving through the paper carrying dissolved substances with it.
Stationary Phase
- the surface through which the solvent and dissolved substances move.
Paper Chromatography:
Draw a
pencil
line close to the bottom of the paper but above the
water
level
Add
ink
drops onto the pencil line
Place in a
beaker
with water until it reaches the
top
of the paper
Substances with a higher solubility will be carried
higher
up the paper in paper chromatography.
Rf Value = distance moved by
solute
/ distance moved by
solvent
