    • OCD
      Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
    • Obsession

      A persistent thought, idea, impulse or image that experienced repeatedly, feels intrusive and causes anxiety
    • Compulsion

      A repetitive and rigid behaviour or mental act that a person feels driven to preform in order to prevent or reduce anxiety. But it is only temporary and it begins to turn into a cycle
    • Disorders recognised by the DSM
      • OCD - characterised by obsessions or compulsions
      • Trichotillomania - compulsive hair pulling
      • Hoarding disorder - compulsive gathering of possessions and inability to part from them
      • Excoriation disorder - compulsive skin picking
    • Main symptoms of OCD (as described by the DSM)
      • Recurrent obsessions and compulsions
      • Recognition by the individual that the obsessions and compulsions are excessive and unreasonable
      • That the person is distressed or impaired, and daily life is disrupted by obsessions and compulsions
    • Behavioural OCD symptomsBehavioural: Emotional: Anxiety, feelings of depression and other negative emotions
      • Cognitive: OCD sufferers are usually plagued with obsessive thoughts, meaning that if an obsession is not acted upon, there may be a negative consequence. To cope, sufferers may develop cognitive strategies or carry out compulsive behaviour
