Repression

• SRs, Bolsheviks and Mensheviks were not impressed.

  • Trotsky described the October Manifesto as a "whip wrapped in the parchment of a constitution".
• Most of the army remained loyal and the end of the Russo-Japanese War in August 1905 meant that more troops returned home.
• The Tsar could concentrate his forces of repression on the revolutionary groups having got the liberals and peasants on his side.
