  • Typhoon
An intense circular storm that originates over warm tropical oceans and is characterized by low atmospheric pressure, high winds, and heavy rain
  • Typhoon
The word "typhoon" derived form the Chinese term "Tai Fung"
  • Typhoon
It is locally known as "bagyo", a term coined after Baguio City in Benguet Province
  • Types of Typhoon
    • Tropical Depression (Wind Speed up 61 kph)
    • Tropical Storm (Wind speed 62-118 kph)
    • Typhoon (Wind speed greater than 118)
    • Super Typhoon (Wind speed exceeding up 220 kph)
  • Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda)

    • Possibly the strongest typhoon in Philippine history
  • Eye
    • Area of the lowest atmospheric pressure, center of the storm as well as the calmest part of the storm
  • Eye Wall
    • Surrounds the eye of the typhoon with a wall of clouds that is considered the most deadly area of a typhoon
  • Rain Bands
    • These bands are what produce the vast majority of the wind and rain that typhoon produce and are the largest part of the storm
  • How Typhoons Form
    1. Warm sea temperature cause rising warm and humid air
    2. The high altitude cause of formation of clouds and causing rising warm air to move towards the central low pressure area
    3. Formation of clouds form a long spiraling clouds and causes incoming winds to swirl around the central low pressure area forming rain bands
    4. It must sustain above 61 kph to form the eye. Strong winds circle around the eye forming eye wall
  • If not for the typhoon there would be severe environmental imbalances
  • Rainfall replenish groundwater and surficial water, it would be hot for live to thrive if not for the redistribution of heat facilitated by Typhoon
  • Effects of Typhoon
    • Strong Winds (Can cover large are and obvious damages)
    • Storm Surges (Sea level increases way above predicted)
    • Heavy Rains (Has the lowest intensity among the three)
  • Measures for Mitigating Typhoon

    • Determine the area prone to typhoon
    • Implementing legislation involving land use planning zoning and buildings
    • Weather Forecasting and Monitoring
    • Effective typhoon warnings
  • PSWS #1
Wind speed of 30 – 60 km/h expected within 36hours and expected to cause zero damages
  • PSWS #2
Wind speed of 61 – 120 km/h expected within 24hours and expected to light moderate damages
  • PSWS #3
Wind speed of 121- 170 km/h expected within 18hours and expected to cause moderate damages
  • PSWS #4
Wind speed of 171 – 220 km/h expected within 12hours and expected to cause very high damages
  • PSWS #5
Wind speed exceeding 220 km/h expected within 12hours and expected to cause widespread damages
