Carter Administration

• Domestic Policy

  Just put on a sweater: don’t turn on the heat because we’re broke.

  Creates Department of Energy. Tries to get an energy bill passed but had a hard time to get support from congress.

  Economy: proposed a stimulus package but instead signed a huge tax cut.
• In an effort to give people food, the government bought CHEESE.

  They bought too much and couldn’t eat it all and Jimmy Carter said to put it underground. It’s called the Cheese Caves.
• Carter tries nationalizes healthcare, Congress said no.
• Foreign Policy- still in the cold war, Carter has dealing with Russia.

  • Carter believes in human rights, said we shouldn’t do business with countries that violate human rights, except all the countries we know violated HR.
• 1979- USSR invades Afghanistan, we put trade sanctions on USSR, we find anti-communist groups and give them money and guns.

  Summer of 1980- olympics were in Moscow, Carter said we’re not going. Other countries allowed their countries to compete under a non-affiliated banner. A lot of people were angry about this, we do participate in the winter Olympics.

  Mujahideen- a TERRORIST group that the US supported, Osama Bin Laden was in it.
• Jimmy Carter gave Panama their Panama Canal Zone back in 1977 (78?)

  Panama didn’t get full control back until the 2000s.

  Carter looked for places to make peace: chose Israel and Egypt (Moses’s people *Hebrews* were enslaved by Egypt).

  Carter invites Prime Minister of Israel and Egypt’s president to solve the beef.

  Sign the Camp David Accords, they win Nobel Peace prizes for this accord. Israel removes its troops from Egypt’s land, and Egypt will become the first arab nation to recognize Israel as a country.
• Prime Minister of Israel goes home and tells the Israeli people about the agreement and they partied.

  President of Egypt goes home and gets assassinated because he agreed to peace.
• US has had their relations with Iran and the middle east sine WW1.

  1950s- CIA decided they don’t like the leader of Iran (Ayatollah) because he nationalizes Irani oil.

  CIA and MI6 overthrow Iran’s government.

  We replace Ayatollah with Shah Reza Pahlavi and we like him because he gives us good deals with oil.

  CIA helps him train a secret police force and provide all the resources for him.
• Irani people call the US ”The Great Satan”.

  Student led movements to oust the Shah and to restore the leader of Iran.

  Tehran- protesters gather outside the US Embassy in Tehran, they’re in “American” soil. Jimmy Carter invites the Shah to the US because he felt bad that the Shah had cancer.

  Irani people want the Shah in Iran so they can kill him
• Iranian Hostage Crisis: the protesters took over the US Embassy in Tehran, let women and black people go, kept everyone else. They want the Shah back but Jimmy doesn’t want to make a deal with terrorists.

  Jimmy Carter will lose the next election to Ronald Reagan, once he was sworn in he got the credit because Hostages were released after 444 days in just the 10 minutes that Reagan was president.
