• What is respiration?

  An exothermic chemical reaction occurring in all cells all the time.Used to release the chemical energy stored in glucose
• What do organisms use energy from respiration for?

  -Building larger molecules (e.g. starch, glycogen and proteins)

  -Movement

  -Keeping warm
• Aerobic Respiration

  -Uses Oxygen

  -Glucose+Oxygen——>CO2 + H2O

  -Complete oxidation

  -Releases far more energy

  -No oxygen debt
• Anaerobic Respiration

  -Does not use oxygen

  -Glucose—>Lactic acid or Glucose—->Ethanol + CO2 (fungi and plants)

  -Incomplete oxidation

  -Releases less energy

  -Oxygen Debt
• What is oxygen debt?

  The amount of oxygen required to remove the lactic acid, and replace the body's reserves of oxygen, is called the oxygen debt.
