Xylem Cell

Cards (6)

  • Function
Transports water and mineral ions from roots to leaves
  • Cell wall - thickened with lignin (provides strength)
  • Transpiration: (of a plant or leaf) the exhalation of water vapour through the stomata
  • Dead tissue and is hollow so it flows only 1 way
  • Transports water into the leaf for mesophyll cells to use in photosynthesis and for transpiration from stomata
  • Best Conditions for transpiration is the same as laundry weather:
-Hot:water molecules have more energy and move faster
-Dry:steeper diffusion gradient from plant to air
    -Air current:maintains diffusion gradient
    /Light:plant photosynthesises so stomata open
