Employment tribunals were created by the Industrial
Training
Act
1964.
Tribunals
are used to enforce the
rights
which have been granted through
social
or
welfare
legislation.
Cases will be heard by a
tribunals
judge
and
two
non-lawyers.
One person will be from the
employer's
organisation, and the other from the
employee's
organisation.
Both sides will put forward their
case
and this is done is a
formal
way.
Both sides will normally have
witnesses
giving
evidence
under
oath
and being
cross-examined.
Lawyers
aren't normally used however employees often have
representation
from their trade
unions.
Tribunal decisions are
binding.
