    Corruption in the Church: The crimes and corruption that took place within the Catholic Church left a lot of people disappointed. It was believed that some issues, such the sale of indulgences (pardons for sins) and the wealth and consumerism of the clergy, betrayed the Church's spiritual mission.

    • German Catholic Priest born in 1483 AD, died in 1546 AD
    • Proposed reforming the Roman Catholic Church due to concerns about corruption and doctrinal contradictions
    • He felt that practices like the selling of indulgences compromised the true message of Christianity, hence why he protested to them.
    • Luther rejected the Pope's authority and argued for an amendment to what he believed to be the essential teachings of the Bible.

    • Henry Asked for annulment from Church, sparking a conflict between him and the church leading to English Reformation
    • Had a son Edward VI with his 3rd wife, Edward became king at 9 after Henry died in 1547
    • Broke with Church in 1533 and married Anne Boleyn in secret
    • Excommunicated by Pope in 1538
    • Henry Established the Church of England and became its supreme head

    • Married Catherine of Aragon in 1509, had daughter Mary, 0 son
    • Tried to get annulment from 1527-1534 because marriage was ‘cursed’ and he wasn’t getting any sons (got denied)
    • Pope Clement VII refused annulment due to political issues and pressure from Catherine's powerful relatives in Spain.
    • found another woman catherines lady-in-waiting Anne Boleyn and started developing feelings for eachother around 1525/1526.
    • Secretly married Anne Boleyn in 1533 before getting annulment in 1534 with Catherine (took 7 years)
    • Pope Paul III officially excommunicated Henry VIII in 1538
