  • Not all microorganisms cause disease. The microorganisms that cause disease are called pathogens. These microorganisms can be pathogens:
    • Virus
    • Fungi
    • Bacteria
    • Protists (single celled organisms)
  • Bacteria consists of a cell wall, a flagellum, a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material (DNA/RNA). There is no nucleus.
  • Viruses consist of antigens, a protein coat and genetic material (DNA/RNA)
  • Diseases can spread by:
    • Aerosol/droplets
    • Bodily fluids
    • Contact
    • Contaminated water
    • Contaminated food
    • Insects
