    • Due to lack of effective equipment and poor leadership meant they suffered many defeats against Germany and Austria-Hungary
    • Tsar put himself in charge of military, which only made things worse

    • 15 million men had joined the army, leaving fields and factories empty
    • This, along with poor infrastructure, led to shortages of food and fuel

    • Over a million Russians died whilst fighting, along with people dying of starvation back at home
    • Tsar and his wife were growing more and more unpopular

    • Lenin snuck back into the country and took over - he promised to end the war for Russia

    1918 - Russia withdrew from the war by giving the Germans lots of their land which included good agricultural land, and land with natural resources

    • Britain and France were furious, breaking pre-war treaties with them
    • Germany now only had to fight on one front
    • With the resources Russia gave Germany, they could now easily recover from the Naval Blockade
