1894-1914 - Railways

• The Russian State also controlled about 66% of the railway companies and railway buildings.
• The different industrial areas were connected by railways as were the key agricultural areas to the Black Sea ports.
• Building railways stimulated heavy industry as iron and coal were needed for construction.
• In 1913, Russia's rail network was the second largest in the world although it was 8 times smaller than the US.
• The building of the Trans-Siberian Railway was seen as a great achievement despite the majority of it being single track.
