Desalination

• desalination = removal of all the salts and minerals from the sea water to make it drinkable
• simplest method of desalination for sea water = distillation
• distillation = boiling sea water BUT uses large amounts of costly energy so not viable process everywhere
• For a country to use desalination they must :

  • have a renewable means of creating heat energy where no carbon dioxide is created (greenhouse effect)
  • sea nearby
